Seven films to watch on Showmax this March

March sees some excellent films land on Showmax – perfect for a night in or a movie marathon session at the weekend on the couch. Here are just a handful of them guaranteed to entertain subscribers.

Jack Reacher

When the police arrest lone sniper James Barr for gunning down five people, they think they have a slam dunk on his conviction. That is, until he calls for Jack Reacher, a former US Military Police Officer who vowed to kill Barr if he ever stepped out of line after returning home from Iraq. Instead, after seeing the evidence relating to the shooting, Reacher becomes the investigator for Barr’s defence.

Starring the ever-reliable Tom Cruise, Jack Reacher is a winding, labyrinthine thriller that boasts as many plot twists as it does action set-pieces. Rope in some of the snappiest dialogue this side of Joss Whedon and you’re looking at a bona fide winner. Watch now »

Selma

Winner of multiple awards, Selma tells the story of an iconic piece of the United States’s racial rights struggle, the Selma To Montgomery human rights march. But rather than focus on the events themselves, Selma peels back the veil of the history of the march and the political infighting it caused.

Starring David Oyelowo as Martin Luther King, Selma aims directly at the heart. It’s impossible to watch this film and not become enraged, overcome and ultimately inspired by its message that equality will always be a struggle. Watch now »

The Hunger Games Collection

Based on the young adult novels by Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games trilogy paints a bleak picture of the future, in which the young are sacrificed in blood sport to prop up the state. In this world, every year in the segregated society of Panem, each district has to send two children – ‘tributes’ – to the Hunger Games, a ritual in which tributes battle to the death until one remains.

Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Donald Sutherland and Philip Seymour Hoffman, the Hunger Games trilogy shines a light of hope into this dystopian future. When one young girl (Lawrence) pushes against the government’s authoritarian rule, people start to rally to her flag. By turns brutal, action-packed and touching, this series of films is essential sci-fi viewing. Watch now »

Shooter

Mark Wahlberg plays the superbly named John Lee Swagger, an elite sniper in self-imposed exile, whose life suddenly becomes a heck of a lot more complicated. After he’s tapped up by the authorities to oversee a security detail for the US President’s trip to town, Swagger suddenly finds himself the target of a nationwide manhunt, when his tactics are used to assassinate a public figure.

Swagger is forced to go on the run and use his military training to survive and clear his name. Shouldn’t be hard for one of the US Force Recon’s best sharpshooters, should it? Watch now »

From Dusk Till Dawn

How does ‘written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by Robert Rodriguez’ grab you? The two kings of pulp unite to produce this fantastic movie that sees a pair of professional thieves stage a daring escape only to wind up with a family they’ve taken hostage in a bar filled to overflowing with vampires. Yes, really.

Starring George Clooney, Harvey Keitel and Mr Tarantino himself, From Dusk Till Dawn is a riveting watch in which the dialogue zingers are only outnumbered by the buckets of blood splashing across the screen. A must-see for grindhouse cinema lovers. Watch now »
