A razor from Don’t Starve – 3D print or render?

A convincing 3D printed prop doesn’t need to be complex to be effective, which is proved brilliantly by this razor from the game Don’t Starve.

Maker Joschka Schulz has perfectly replicated the look of the game in the real world with a great paint job using simple spray paint followed up with the thick black and white lines added in afterwards with a Sharpie.

Schulz was nice enough to send us a few pictures of the print in different places so you can see how the effect looks as you move it around.

This project started off as a model in Fusion 360 where getting the more organic look of the materials proved to be a challenge, especially the wooden handle and the chips in the blade.

The handle was accomplished using the software’s form tool and those chips were cut out using different sizes of spheres.

After printing the two parts were joined together with glue and sanded smooth. The piece of twine between them is not printed, so keep that in mind if you make your own.

To do that start with the files on Thingiverse and set aside a short amount of time to get it made. Unlike many prints which take weeks or even months to complete, Schulz says that modelling, printing, finishing and painting was all done within a single day.
