Tinder’s parent company files patent infringement lawsuit against Bumble

The company that owns Tinder and Match.com – Match Group – filed a lawsuit last week against Bumble.

Like Tinder, Bumble is a dating app with the unique feature that the woman need to send the first message for a match to exist.

The suit filed in Waco, Texas alleges that Bumble infringed on Tinder’s patented swipe mechanic. The suit doesn’t stop there, however.

Match Group has also accused Bumble’s founding members of stealing proprietary information when they left Tinder to start Bumble.

“Bumble has released at least two features that its co-founders learned of and developed confidentially while at Tinder in violation of confidentiality agreements,” reads the lawsuit.

Match Group wants the suit to be heard before a jury and also wants to claim any damages that might arise but, according to Recode, there might be another motive behind the suit – acquisition.

Late last year Match Group offered Bumble $450 million to acquire it. The offer was turned down but sources say that Match Group still has an eye trained on Bumble.

For Bumble the easiest way to make this lawsuit go away might be to strike a deal with the owner of the patent it is apparently infringing upon.

Whether Bumble would be willing to part ways with current owner Badoo in exchange for making a lawsuit go away remains to be seen.
