Chronological feeds are coming back to Instagram

The absolute worst part of Instagram is the algorithm.

Anybody that uses the service frequently will tell you that Instagram posts are arranged in much the same way a toddler packs their toys away. That is to say it isn’t arranged at all.

For months users have bemoaned the chronological issues of their timelines and Instagram has finally listened.

The first big change touches on the problem of the feed refreshing suddenly. Users often find themselves flung to the top of their feed while scrolling because Tim in accounting thought his oatmeal was Instagram worthy and the feed refreshes to show you the various shades of grey and brown that Tim thought was artsy.

“Today we’re testing a ‘New Posts’ button that lets you choose when you want to refresh, rather than it happening automatically. Tap the button and you’ll be taken to new posts at the top of feed — don’t tap, and you’ll stay where you are,” explained Instagram.

The most important change (at least to us) is to your feed’s order.

“Based on your feedback, we’re also making changes to ensure that newer posts are more likely to appear first in feed. With these changes, your feed will feel more fresh, and you won’t miss the moments you care about,” explained the social network.

Here’s hoping the change works and we can go back to browsing our Instagram feeds in order.
