Notch the phone we were expecting – Huawei unveils the P20 Pro

Huawei didn’t use MWC 2018 to debut its new flagship handset like Sony and Samsung and instead chose an event in Paris to reveal its new P20 and P20 Pro to the world.

Yes the handset has a notch just like the iPhone X and it lacks a 3.5mm jack like the rest of the Apple ilk, but Huawei has more to offer, trust us.

The handsets are the next in the P-series and, while we loved the camera in the Samsung Galaxy S9, we suspect that Huawei together with Leica is about to reclaim its crown as one of the finest smartphone camera manufacturers.

Huawei says that the camera sensor in its P20 Pro is the largest yet in a smartphone. How big? They say the sensor is 170 percent bigger than the one in Apple’s iPhone X.

At the back you’ll find a 1/1.7″ sensor shooting at 40MP with a f/1.8 aperture, and optical image stabilisation. This is paired with another lens shooting at 20MP (f/1.6) and yet another 8MP lens (f/2.4) all enveloped in Leica optics.

The P20 Pro will also boast 3X optical zoom or 5X hybrid zoom, and a new form of image stabilisation, Artificial Intelligence Image Stabilisation.

Using machine learning the snapper will stabilise multiple frames so that you can (here’s hoping you’re sitting down) capture long exposure shots.

The P20 Pro can even shoot video at 960fps which can be slowed down for butter smooth slow motion video.

We’re not pulling your leg, Huawei showed off a few shots during its presentation and they look great. Frankly we are stunned at this news.

Elsewhere you’ll find a Kirin 970 processor in both the P20 and P20 Prom 6GB of RAM in the Pro and 4GB of RAM on the standard P20. Both models will sport 128GB of storage.

Huawei’s on-device AI capabilities introduce in the Mate 10 Pro return in the P20 as do features like fast charging. Curiously, Huawei has moved the fingerprint sensor from the rear to the front of the handset.

There’s no word yet on a local release or pricing but we’ll be attending a local launch of the P20 and P20 Pro next week when we’ll be able to give you more info and, hopefully, a few glamour shots from the handset itself.
