Uber introduces driver tipping in South Africa

Starting from today Uber customers will be able to tip their Uber driver right from the app.

The new feature will be shown to users at the end of the trip once they have rated it. Users will be able to select from pre-determined amounts or select a custom amount to tip their driver. The feature works for both Uber rides and Uber Eats deliveries.

“Improving the driving experience has been a key priority for us over the last year. We’re excited to roll out this new feature as a continuation of this effort and make the app work best for over 13 000 drivers in South Africa,” said general manager for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa, Alon Lits, in a statement.

The firm says that tips will be sent directly to the driver-partner or courier and that it receives no service fees.

“We believe this will make a huge difference in the driver-partners lives and will ensure they continue to have a positive experience with the Uber app,” added Lits.

Users will need to have the latest version of the app to be able to tip drivers.

Sadly this feature requires drivers to opt-in to be able to receive tips, so perhaps spread the word so all drivers will know.
