Apple unveils refreshed iPad for schools

Apple has unveiled a new iPad to the world but really it’s more of a refresh than an all-new slate.

Users of the iPad Pro will notice a number of similarities between this new iPad and the Pro. It includes Touch ID support, an HD front facing camera, an 8MP rear camera and an A10 Fusion chip from the Apple stable.

Specifications wise then, it’s very similar to the iPad Pro.

Like the Pro pads, this iteration will also have support for the Apple Pencil which should be great providing the cost is low.

The revamped iPad will retail for $329 according to The Verge but Apple aims to market this slate to schools and is offering them a haircut on the price of the pad and the Pencil. In the US schools will be able to pick up an iPad for $299 and a Pencil for $89.

Whether this pricing model will be followed in the rest of the world remains to be seen but at the moment a regular New iPad (released in 2017) retails for just over R5 500 in South Africa. That’s a lot of money for a school learner (or rather their parents) to fork over for a digital education tool.

Software for school

Apple has also overhauled its software to support classrooms as well as the Pencil. The firm announced that there will be new versions of Pages, Numbers and Keynote designed for the classroom.

Also introduced is a new tool called Smart Annotation within Pages. Teachers will be able to mark papers while their students take notes. It seems as if Apple wants to streamline the classroom and make it a more collaborative environment.

There are apparently as many as 200 000 apps made for education.

There is no word yet on a local release date or pricing, but as soon as we know we’ll be sure to update you.
