Family of victim involved in AV collision settles with Uber

The family of Elaine Herzberg, who was killed in a collision involving an autonomous vehicle (AV) owned by Uber, has agreed to a settlement with the firm.

The attorney representing the daughter and husband of Herzberg, Cristina Perez Hesano, told Reuters that “the matter has been resolved” and that the family will not comment further on the matter as they consider it resolved.

The details of the settlement were not made public.

This is likely good news for Uber which might have been staring down the barrel of a lawsuit given this is the first incident in which an AV has killed a pedestrian.

That having been said, the incident has sparked investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The death of Herzberg saw Uber suspend its testing Arizona. This week however, the governor of Arizona Douglas Ducey rescinded Uber’s right to test AVs in the state.

“Improving public safety has always been the emphasis of Arizona’s approach to autonomous vehicle testing and my expectation is that public safety is also the top priority for all who operate this technology in the state of Arizona,” Ducey said.

Nvidia has also halted testing of AVs until more is known about the cause of the Uber collision.
