Gear Of The Year 2017 – Your favourite tablets

It was a slow year for tablets in 2017.

There was very little that was new or exciting that came to market and as such we see that the stalwarts of the industry remain at the top of the charts among our readers.

With a whopping 45.1% of the vote Apple’s iPad Pro has come out as the first choice of tablet among our readers.

Yes, the iPad Pro is expensive but it just takes using one, even for a few minutes to realise why it is among the world’s best tablets.

It’s high performance means its suited for work whether that is typing up spreadsheets, word documents or content creation. The Apple Pencil that can be paired with an iPad Pro is fantastic for illustrators whether they’re at home or on the move.

As to the price the iPad Pro is not marketed as a cheap tablet and its performance and utility means that you are really getting what you pay for – a premium product that excels in a variety of tasks.

The second most popular slate among readers by a large margin is the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3. The tab was released in 2017 and is the newest model on our charts. The Tab S3 features a Snapdragon 820 chipset, which means that you get support for the latest Wifi and mobile connectivity options.

Performance is also helped along thanks to beefier specifications under the hood. While it is a decent Android tablet the Tab3 is pricey and as good as it might be it can’t really compete with the king of slates according to our readers.

In third position we have the quirky Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 with it’s multimode capability thanks to the kickstand. The tablet can be used in variety of ways including being hung from a hook so you can view a recipe easily while you cook.

The slate is a bit behind the times with entry-level devices running Android 5.x (the current iteration is Android 8.0) and containing chipsets that are best put out to pasture. The upside of this is that you can pick up an HD tablet for R3 500 or cheaper if you look around. It’s also good news for anybody that needs a device for work purposes.

Staff Pick

My choice for the best tablet is once again the iPad Pro.

Of all the Apple products I’ve used the iPad is the best of the lot. Its performance is superb whether you are doing work, editing images or playing games.

For artists, business professionals and even families the iPad Pro is a worthy investment and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anybody looking for a new slate
