Instagram is preparing to launch Nametags

Instagram is preparing to launch a new feature called Nametags.

Nametags will let users create a special image that people can scan with the Instagram Stories camera to follow them. This sounds like a Snapchat QR code clone and could make it easier for people to promote their accounts.

While this isn’t exactly a groundbreaking feature for the average user, businesses or influencers can use their Nametag for various marketing purposes making it easier to connect with their brand. It also gives them the opportunity to break away from using Snapchat and capture a larger share of the facebook-owned Instagram market. This combined with chronological feeds making a comeback might win some people over.

You can check out a demo of how Nametags will work in the video below:

Once users have access, they’ll be able to hit a QR scanner button on their profile to bring up the Nametag editor. They can then choose from a purple Instagram color gradient background, a pattern of one emoji they choose or a selfie they can jazz up with augmented reality face filters that then becomes an emoji pattern. The user’s Instagram username appears in the center. For now, users in the test group can’t share or scan Nametags

No release date for the feature has been announced yet but a source at Instagram has confirmed to TechCrunch that testing is currently underway.
