Sam Fisher is joining Ghost Recon: Wildlands today

Splinter Cell fans will know that Sam Fisher’s been rather absent from Ubisoft’s release schedule in recent times.

Earlier this year, we became rather excited when it looked like Amazon had outed a new Splinter Cell game, and even though it’s not the best entry in the series, it was good to see Splinter Cell: Conviction join the Xbox One’s backwards compatibility program.

Now it seems that Splinter Cell fans may get something of a Sam Fisher fix this year, provided they own a copy of Ghost Recon: Wildlands. From today, players will be able to download Special Operation 1, a Splinter Cell-themed mission in which they can team up with the stealth series’ gravelly-throated protagonist. The best part? Michael Ironside has returned to voice Sam – the way nature intended.

Special Operation 1 is the first of four free updates for Ghost Recon: Wildlands, slated for release throughout the year. Players can tackle it solo or in co-op and it’s described by Ubisoft as “one of the most difficult missions the Ghosts have ever faced”.

Successfully completing the mission will net players nifty Splinter Cell gear, such as Sam’s tri-lense sonar goggles with night-vision, but only if the mission is completed before 16th May.

The new update also includes a new Echelon class for PVP modes, which offers a pulse ability that can reveal enemies at short range. On top of that, Special Operations 1 arrives with Splinter Cell gear and customisation options, including Sam’s close-combat knife and his SC 4000 prototype assault rifle.

If you don’t own a copy of Ghost Recon: Wildlands, fear not, as Ubisoft is offering a free weekend with the game across Xbox One, PS4 and PC platforms. Players can start downloading the game on 12th April and can play for free until 15th April.
