Gear Of The Year 2017 – SMME Business Smartphones

Choosing a smartphone for business purposes is rather different than choosing a smartphone for your personal use.

For Gear of the Year 2017 we asked you which was the best smartphone for business professionals and the results are rather interesting to ponder over.

Starting with the launch of the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus, the South Korean manufacturer showed off not only a beautiful handset but a functional one as well. The inclusion of Samsung DeX gave business people the option of using their handset as a work PC simply by connecting the handset to a monitor and Bluetooth peripherals.

Then later in the year Samsung came back with yet another winner – the Galaxy Note 8.

With incredible performance, a more than decent camera and the all important 3.5mm headphone jack Samsung showed us that it wasn’t about to let Apple win the smartphone wars. Aside from the high end smartphones Samsungs mid to low-tier offering was also rather compelling in 2017. The J4 was available for under R1 500 and offered features such as support for LTE.

A total of 35.9 percent of readers chose Samsung as the best business smartphone for 2017.

Meanwhile Apple’s showing in 2017 was rather lacking. The iPhone 8 was a minimal upgrade over the 7s series and while the iPhone X has been lauded as a beautiful handset left and right it appears as if business people are more concerned with functionality than good looks.

This less than enthusiastic release left our readers wanting, 31.9 percent of readers to be exact.

Perhaps the time has come for Apple to really listen to its users because Samsung is gaining traction fast and from what we’ve already seen in 2018 the South Korean electronics giant shows no signs of slowing down.

It’s also worth noting that in 2017 Apple released no competitively priced handsets in the mid to low price tiers. While many executives use Apple handsets it would be fiscally impossible for a large enterprise to supply all employees with a shiny new iPhone.

The third most popular smartphone manufacturer for business professionals in 2017 was Huawei.

The major releases from Huawei in 2017 were the P10 (and the subsequent Lite versions of the handset) as well as the Mate 10 Pro. The latter of those two handsets was rather impressive in that it contain artificial intelligence capabilities on the handset rather than using a cloud service to handle the computation.
