Google Go has launched in South Africa

Google has launched Google Go, a new search app tailor-made for the African continent. Google Go is a new way to search and holds true to company’s mission to “Organise the world’s information and make it universally accessible”.

Mich Atagana, Head of Communications and Public Affairs at Google South Africa, along with Mzamo Masito, chief marketing officer of Google’s Sub-Saharan Africa branch, unveiled the new app and showed off its features in Johannesburg this morning.

Google Go is a search app that seeks to address the various issues users have on the African continent. First-time smartphone users in Africa tend to have lower end devices with limitations such as low RAM or storage space available in their devices. Google Go is a lightweight search app that comes in at a mere 3.55 MB download size yet packs all the features and accessibility of the standard Google Search engine.

“With Google Go, everything you need is just a tap away. Easily search for information or see what’s trending in your country. Find an inspirational quote for a loved one with an image or GIF search, discover places nearby, and browse videos. Access all your favorite apps and websites and discover the top destinations in your country,” the firm said in a statement.

The app also features a trending search which displays what popular topics people in your geo-located region are searching for. Additionally, the app also has a built-in image and GIF search which touts a blisteringly fast search speed.

Google’s Masito explains, “Users come to us to experience the web and access accurate information quickly. Unfortunately users can’t always decide on the type of device they have or the kind of connection they are on. Google Go is designed from the ground up to address these issues and provide a seamless experience irrespective of what device or network the user is on.”

The Google Go app is available in 26 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa and can be downloaded right now on the Google PlayStore.

Updated 12/04: A previous version of this story stated Mzamo Masito was Google Africa’s chief executive officer when he is in fact Google Africa’s chief marketing officer. The story has been amended to reflect Masito’s correct designation.
