Gear Of The Year 2017 – SMME Projectors

Why invest in a flatscreen TV when you can throw your entertainment onto a wall?

Technology hasn’t made the cinema obsolete yet, but it’s coming closer everyday. Between streaming services and TV sets the size of ping-pong tables, there may one day be no reason to buy a ticket and bucket of popcorn to see a movie.

In the meantime, if you want your home entertainment supersized and a TV set (even one of the bigger ones) won’t cut it, you might want to have a look at buying a projector. Whether you’re watching movies or playing videogames, a home projector can make your experience look epic. On top of that, if you want to make your business presentation look as crisp, clear and professional as possible, it’s worth investing in the best money can buy.

But if you’re new to this game, finding the right projector can be a challenge. Do you go for a DLP or an LCD projector? How bright do you want your picture to be? And how important is bulb-longevity to you?

Our readers have picked out Acer as their favourite brand with 23,5% of the vote. This is probably down to the variety offered by the Taiwanese manufacturer’s range of projectors in terms of pricing and choice. Visual brightness runs anywhere from 1,500 lumen to 3,000 lumen, while fidelity starts at WXVGA to full HD. For those with deeper pockets Acer even offers a 4K option, so you can play those PS4 games the way they were meant to be played.

A large chunk of our readership (22.3%) have gone with Dell as their projector of choice and the reason may sound boring, but it also happens to be true: value for money.

Yes, you pay more for a Dell projector and yes, Dell offers a narrower range of products in this field, but there are good reasons for this. In the case of the latter, Dell’s projectors aren’t in competition with each other in terms of price bracket and visual fidelity, as is the case with so many of its competitors.

In the case of the former, buying one of Dell’s projectors is an investment backed up by the lifespan of the product. With Dell, you really do get what you pay for.

Epsom is the world’s leader and primary manufacturer of the LCD panels that are placed in projectors, which probably explains why it makes the top three in our readers’ selection (19.2%).

Most colour projectors sacrifice a bit of the IR palette fidelity in order to to provide more brightness, but Epsom projectors don’t. They’re used by myriad consumers from home cinema aficionados to schools to businesses for presentations. To top it all off, Epsom projectors are less expensive than most, and the support is absolutely excellent.
