Vodacom expands 4G coverage in South Africa

Good news for Vodacom users today – the firm has announced extended coverage of its 4G network.

Vodacom tells us that its 4G network now covers 80 percent of the population. For those interested: its 3G network covers 99.78 percent of the population while the 2G network covers 99.97 percent of the population.

They say that users in some rural areas of the Free State, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal will now enjoy the same 4G connectivity users in the heart of Johannesburg have been using for some time now.

Spectrum shortage slow’s down spread

While Vodacom has invested R39.69 billion in expanding its network over the last five years the company has said that spectrum constraints slow down expansion of its network.

In spite of this Vodacom chief technology officer Andries Delport says that they continue to widen its coverage.

“Despite the ongoing spectrum constraints, Vodacom now provides over 80% 4G coverage in South Africa. Our aim is to expand our network coverage to all parts of the country, including remote rural areas. Access to new, sub 1GHz spectrum will enable the more cost effective rollout of 4G, which will help Vodacom increase broadband coverage to more South Africans,” Delport said in a statement.

Vodacom has become the first mobile network on the African continent to exceed 80 percent population coverage.
