Apple offers free global MacBook Pro battery replacement after flaws are spotted

Apple has announced that it will offer a free battery replacement to any 13-inch MacBook Pro, after it was reported that some units were suffering from a component flaw.

According to Reuters, this failure caused the built-in battery in some laptops to expand. While the flaw does not constitute a safety hazard, Apple is offering to replace any such affected batteries in MacBook Pros worldwide.

While Apple hasn’t released an exact figure on the number of devices affected, it has said that the units that qualify for this support are non-touchbar models that were manufactured between October of 2016 and October of 2017. If you want to check whether your MacBook Pro is eligible for a free batter replacement, head over to Apple’s support page, and type in your unit’s serial number.

Users who experienced battery problems with their MacBook Pros and paid to have them fixed prior to this announcement can contact Apple about a refund.

Apple says that this service does not extend the warranty on any of the MacBook Pro units affected. Furthermore, Apple says that if your laptop has suffered any damage which impairs the replacement of the battery, that issue will need to be resolved prior to the battery replacement. In some cases, there may be an additional cost associated with the repair.

There’s no need for anyone to rush off to Apple immediately, although it’s probably a good idea to replace a swelling battery sooner rather than later; Apple says that the batter replacement scheme will be offered over the next five years.
