Winter is coming and players will have more of an excuse than ever to remain huddled up in doors, enjoying games on their console of choice.

Xbox console owners are in for a particularly good month heading into May’s drop in temperature, as the Games With Gold program is offering some rather mouthwatering titles.

If you’re a Gold account holder, you’ll be able to download the following titles free of charge in that month’s window:

  • Super Mega Baseball 2 (available on Xbox One from 1s to 31st May)
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (available on Xbox One from 16th May to 15th June)
  • Sega Vintage Collection: Streets Of Rage (available on Xbox One and Xbox 360 from 1st to 15th May)
  • Vanquish (available on Xbox One and Xbox 360 from 16th to 31st May)

The pick of the litter here is easily MGSV: The Phantom Pain. Hideo Kojima’s last instalment in the franchise that turned him into a global household name is probably this superb series high point. Our reviewer Deon Du Plessis was blown away by it when it first saw release back in 2015, and although he didn’t award it a score (mainly because after 30+ hours in he still had a long way to go), he was of the opinion it’s an essential title for any platform.

Vanquish is another winner. Platinum Games’s take on cover-based third-person shooters is one of the most challenging and satisfying shooters ever released. It’s popular enough to qualify for the Xbox’s backwards compatible program already, but if you never bought a copy, you can now own one for free.

If you’re a baseball fan you could do worse than Super Mega Baseball 2, and quite frankly, Streets Of Rage really needs no introduction.

The chill of the forthcoming winter months looks a little warmer already.
