SqwidNet and Sigfox announce IoT challenge for varisty students

The internet of things is equal parts exciting and terrifying but for today let’s focus on the exciting aspects of everything being connected to everything.

SqwidNet together with Sigfox has launched the University IoT Challenge which calls on university students to create solutions to everyday problems in South Africa.

“This nationwide competition has been designed to challenge students to develop and create innovative projects focused on building solutions that make use of SqwidNet / SIGFOX technology. The applications of IoT have been seen in a number of industries and SqwidNet would like to see young South African minds using this technology to address African socio-economic problems,” SqwidNet said in a statement.

The challenge happens in two phases.

The first phase will see students participating as teams, pitch their ideas. Those with ideas that the judges think are best will move on to the second phase. The judges are looking for solutions to any problems but will use the UN Sustainable Development Guidelines to evaluate a proposed solution.

Phase two will see those that made it through phase one creating a prototype of their idea. Teams will be given development kits and mentoring by SigFox and SqwidNet.

At the end of the development period the prototypes will be judged and a winner will be selected.

What exactly is up for grabs?

Winners will score a cash prize for themself and their university as well as the chance to present their idea at IoT Valley in Toulouse, France.

If you and your mates are interested in solving an African problem with the help of IoT and win yourself some cash for doing it head to the SqwidNet website before entries close on 27th May.
