Icasa kills off nasty out-of-bundle data charges

Anybody hoping to hear that the price of data would come down today following an Independent Communications Authority of South Africa press briefing will be left wanting.

The authority announced that today was the first step in a journey that would ultimately see the price of data come down.

That having been said today Icasa set down new regulations that licensees would have to abide by.

The first regulation will require licensees to notify users about their usage when it reaches 50 percent, 80 percent, and 100 percent.

The second regulation will require licensees to provide customers with the option to roll-over data so that they don’t lose out on their purchase.

The third regulation will require licensees to allow users to transfer data to other users on the same network.

Finally, and perhaps the most important regulation change is to out-of-bundle rates. No licensee may charge a user out of bundle rates when data runs out without the express permission of the user.

So while there is no news on the cost of data the way you consume your data should change for the better.

The authority has said it will publish the regulations in full in the coming week.
