Snapchat, after having just introduced the ability to build your own face filters, have announced that their app will be getting augmented reality (AR) games capabilities soon. “Snappables” have been shown off for the first time in the video below. And yes, it’s just as crazy as the thumbnail makes it seem.
Today, we’re introducing Snappables — new Lenses for playing augmented reality games with your friends! You can control Snappables using touch, motion, and even facial expressions.
Snappables live right where Lenses do. Just choose one and get your game face on! Then, invite your friends to play along too. Some Snappables let you challenge friends to beat your high score, while others can invite them to multiplayer games!
Fight aliens, start a rock band, play basketball, and more — together with your friends, no matter where you are. New Snappables will be released every week!
While you may or may not look ridiculous using this in public, this is an incredibly smart move by Snapchat. AR games are a great way to get people to spend more time on an app. Snappables is a part of the company’s turnaround as it tries to compete with its major rival, Instagram. The update aims to get users to use Lenses and in turn, spend more time in the app exploring other features such as Snapchat Stories and Snapchat’s Discover feature.
The Snappables update for Snapchat will roll out to iOS and Android devices later this week
