Gunwoman injures three, kills self at YouTube HQ

Yesterday afternoon in San Bruno, California, a woman walked into YouTube headquarters and opened fire on staff.

The shooter was identified as 38 year old Nasim Aghdam by police who arrived on scene shortly after shots were heard. The shooter injured three people – two women who are in serious and fair conditions as well as a man who is in a critical condition – before taking her own life, according to The Register.

While the motive for the shooting is not clear at this stage, it has been discovered that Aghdam had something of a grudge toward YouTube.

“There is no equal growth opportunity on YOUTUBE or any other video sharing site, your channel will grow if they want to,” wrote Aghdam on her website alongside statements that there is no free speech in the world.

The shooter appears to have had videos demonetised which is a common problem on YouTube.

Chief executive officer at Google (YouTube’s parent company) Sundar Pichai said in a statement, “There are no words to describe the tragedy that occurred today. Susan Wojcicki [YouTube CEO] and I are focused on supporting our employees and the YouTube community through this difficult time together. Thank you to the police and first responders for their efforts, and to all for messages of support.”

The shooting has renewed calls for stricter gun control in the United States. District Attorney George Gascón was quoted as saying, “A shooting has once again rocked a community, and those with the authority to reduce gun violence in this country have once again offered nothing more than thoughts and prayers. Rightwing lawmakers crow about law and order while bending at the knee for the NRA – the industry flacks for the ultimate threat to public safety.”

The shooter’s social media pages including Facebook and YouTube have been taken down at time of writing.
