Heavy rain and fire forecast for Western Cape

It appears that relief for the drought-stricken Western Cape is in sight according to weather forecasts.

An official statement from the South African Weather Service (SAWS) predicts not just heavy rainfall in the Western Cape but also dangerous conditions which might lead to fires.

Residents in central parts of Northern Cape, north-western parts of the Eastern Cape as well as the Western Cape (eexcept along the west and south-west coast) are warned that dangerous conditions may lead to fires.

On the other end of the weather spectrum, heavy rains are forecast for parts of the Western Cape.

“Heavy rain leading to localised flooding can be expected over the
Cape Metropole, Cape Winelands and western parts of the Overberg
district from [Monday] evening into Tuesday morning,” SAWS said in a statement this weekend.

This news should provide some relief to Western Cape residents who have faced water restrictions since last year as the prospect of Day Zero – the day where all taps would be turned off – loomed closer.

In spite of the dams threatening to run dry the City of Cape Town was able to push Day Zero back to 2019.

Level 6b water restrictions which limit use to 50 litres per person per day are still in effect according to the City of Cape Town website.
