Survey reveals very few users know what data Facebook collects

Many times we see folks reacting with outrage to something on social media and then do nothing about it.

The most recent outcry involves Facebook. A scandal which involved Cambridge Analytica had allegedly abused its access to Facebook user data had many users cry foul.

Recently Mozilla conducted a survey where 47 000 individuals were asked how they feel about Facebook.

The firm points out that this is a self-selecting survey which draws on the Mozilla Foundation mailing list, the Pocket newsletter, the Mozilla Twitter account and a Medium blog post. So while it isn’t exactly scientific it does give us an idea of what a large clutch of internet users feel.

The majority of survey respondents – 76 percent – are concerned with the safety of their data but in the same breath, only 22 percent of them know what data Facebook collects.

The figure that concerns us the most reveals just how lackadaisical Facebook users are when it comes to taking control of their data. Of the 47 000 people surveyed only 20 percent made changes on Facebook following the Cambridge Analytica debacle.

So while users are concerned about their data they don’t appear to be doing anything to protect that data, despite 65 percent of respondents saying they believed they were responsible for keeping their information safe.

There does also appear to be a correlation between a fear of Facebook and how tech-savvy you are. Those in the know are more likely to fear the social network compared to average users.

Mozilla has made the data it collected from the survey available for you to dive into and play around with here.
