After a tease and a few leaks that turned out to be true, we now have concrete information about what the Neo Geo Mini.
A Japanese press room has provided the details of a unit 162 millimetre tall with a 3.5″ LCD display, six buttons and a joystick.
At 600 grams we doubt this will taken around in your pocket, but it is small enough to carry around. For comparison the Nintendo Switch with Joy-Cons attached is only around 400 grams.
Under the screen there looks to be two small speakers with HDMI out, a headphone jack and two controller ports on the sides.
The Japanese market will be getting a more colourful version of the Neo Geo Mini, with the rest of the world receiving a black, white and blue colour scheme.
Despite specific mention of those controller ports, the actual controllers are not unveiled. Given the accuracy of the leaks, however, this is probably what they’ll look like.
There will, of course, be a selection of games but details are sparse. We know that there will be 40 titles available, but there’s no word on what these will be or if more games can be added at a later date.
Pricing, release date and availability are also a mystery at this point. We’d have to imagine that it will retail for more than the Mini consoles from Nintendo given this console’s ability to play games on its own without the need to be connected to a TV.
One other aspect that the Neo Geo Mini borrows from those small Nintendo devices is that it will not come packaged with a power cable, which is extremely odd for something that has an internal battery.
You can read over the press release for this, but note that it is in Japanese. If you’re using Google Chrome and the translate option doesn’t appear, right click on the page and select “Translate to English”.
One of the original leak videos can be found below which gives you a bit more than the release does, but is still technically not confirmed at this point.
