Valve confirms Steam Link app for Android and iOS coming in May

Here’s something awesome – Valve has revealed that it will release a Steam Link application for devices running Android or iOS later this month.

While we are positively giddy at the idea of being able to play our Steam library on our phones while we sit in bed, the service does have a few caveats.

To take advantage your device would need to be connected to a 5GHz WiFi network or to a network via an ethernet cable. This is possibly due to the data rate required to offer up a serviceable experience for users.

Steam Link will be released on 21st May for iOS and Android though at launch it will be offered in beta so expect a few bugs along the way.

As for controllers, Valve explains that “the Steam Link App will feature support for the Steam Controller, MFI controllers, and more across both platforms.”

It isn’t entirely clear whether you will be able to use Playstation or Xbox controllers just yet. We aren’t even sure if you’ll be able to use touch controls though we suspect touch support is not something many PC game developers include in their games.

Of course, as soon as we get our hands on Steam Link we’ll test an array of controllers to see what does and doesn’t work.

Valve also announced that “later this summer” (that’s our Winter here at the bottom of Africa) it would release a Steam Video app that would allow users to stream video content from their Steam library to their Android or iOS device. Video can be streamed over WiFi or LTE and Valve adds that it will allow users to download video to enjoy offline.

There’s also no mention of the physical Steam Link device which Valve released and then quickly forgot about.

But we digress, PC GAMES ON MOBILE!

It seems like just the other day we were amazed that you could play Titan Quest on your iPhone.
