No YouTube Premium or YouTube Music for South Africa

YouTube has become more than a video streaming service and the firm knows that.

We say this because YouTube has announced two new products that will replace YouTube Red.

As you might know YouTube Red gave users access to exclusive content such as Rhett and Link’s Buddy System, Mind Field and the recently launched Cobra Kai.

In addition to the original content, YouTube Red also included a subscription to Google Play Music.

But now YouTube has decided to split the service up into YouTube Music and YouTube Premium. Like YouTube Red, neither service will be available in South Africa.

YouTube Music will launch on 22nd May alongside a redesigned mobile app featuring thousands of playlists and millions of songs.

The service will have a free tier but you can remove ads, download songs and listen to music while multitasking for $9.99 per month.

The service we’ve always wanted

While a music streaming service is nice we’re really excited for YouTube Premium.

Much like YouTube Red, Premium will give you access to all of YouTube’s Originals including fortcoming releases like Impulse and Liza Koshy’s Liza on Demand. No word on Scare PewDiePie season two or The Thinning: New World Order starring Logan Paul.

The real draw of YouTube Premium is the removal of advertising. Subscribers to the service can also play video in the background on mobile devices (which is nice for podcasts) and you’ll be directly supporting creators.

Sadly like YouTube Music, YouTube Premium will not be available in South Africa. The service will launch in the US, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and South Korea.

YouTube adds that the service will soon be available in Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

A subscription to YouTube Premium (which includes YouTube Music) will cost $11.99 per month.
