$2 million up for grabs in Google Impact Challenge South Africa

Do you run a charity or non-profit organisation? Then Google has some exciting news for you.

The firm today announced the Google Impact Challenge South Africa. The challenge opens today and calls on non-profit organisations to submit ideas they feel are worthy of being funded.

Take note, the competition is only open to registered charities, non-profit and non-government organisations.

The idea submitted, can be anything, but Google did say ideas that employ the use of technology (whether that be AI or an SMS to a feature phone) are encouraged.

“We believe technology can help local and national organisations to better reach their goals and solve some of the continent’s most pressing challenges, and we are eager to back people who are using technology in new ways to make a positive difference in their communities,” Google Africa’s chief marketing officer Mzamo Masito said in a statement.

The challenge runs until 4th of July at which point submissions will close. Then Google executives and a panel of judges which includes the likes of HuffPost SA editor-at-large Ferial Haffajee, Maps Maponyane, and computer scientist Rapelang Rabana will select 12 finalists.

From these final 12, three entities will be selected to receive $250 000 as well as mentorship, access to Google technologies and other Google support. The public will be able to select one more winner which will receive $250 000 as well.

Public voting for the fourth winner will open on 5th November.

The final eight finalists will receive $125 000 as well as Google support.

The final awards ceremony for the Google Impact Challenge South Africa will take place during the week of 26th November.

“This is the first time we are running a Google Impact Challenge in Africa. Many African non-profits are doing great work with real impact and we’re keen to shine a light on them, and give a financial boost to innovative projects and ideas,” said Masito.

Entries for the challenge can be submitted through the Impact Challenge website before 4th July.
