Stop! Are you sure that Facebook link is real?

Fake Facebook websites are a rather big problem according to data from Kaspersky Lab.

The firm reports that during the first quarter of 2018, the Facebook brand was being spoofed by so many phishing websites. So many in fact, that 58.69 percent of phishing sites were parading as Facebook.

To be clear, this doesn’t mean Facebook was compromised, but rather that cybercriminals created carbon copies of the site. These crims hope that unsuspecting users will think the site really is Facebook and key in their credentials.

“The continuous increase in phishing attacks – targeting both social networks and financial organisations – shows us that users need to pay more serious attention to their online activities. Despite the recent global scandals, people continue to click on unsafe links and allow unknown apps access to their personal data,” Kaspersky Lab’s Nadezhda Demidova said in a statement.

Facebook is not the only target however, Russia’s Vkontakte was used by 20.86 percent of phishing sites while LinkedIn was used by 12.91 percent.

To combat these sorts of attacks users should be vigilant and take careful note of URLs they click. In fact, before you click a link be sure to hover over it with your mouse. Look out for strange characters hidden within the URL. For example: fæcebook.com is not the same as facebook.com.

Be vigilant folks, as so many experts have told us time and time again, it’s not a matter of if you’ll be a victim of cybercrime, but when.
