A DIY Nintendo Switch XL that’s actually sensible

There’s been many attempts to hack together some kind of unofficial Nintendo Switch XL that increases the size of the console’s screen while still remaining portable.

YouTube channel My Mate VINCE attemped to do just that a few months ago and, while it was impressive in its own way, it was not really viable for extended play.

But the channel has returned for another stab at the same concept and it’s hit on the rather excellent idea of using the controls originally intended for the Linx Vision.

This older tablet, which you can still buy today if you shop around, had sizeable controllers on either side of a tablet, with everything being supported with a beefy frame.

This frame and control setup act as the basis for this project, which houses a Switch in a portable dock powered by a battery bank.

An adapter is used to get the controls working here. While the buttons were setup with the Xbox format, they’ve been swapped around here so they lineup with Nintendo’s face button layout.

This wouldn’t be a “Nintendo Switch XL” if it didn’t have a bigger screen, and that’s accomplished here with a 10.1″ 1080p screen that’s intended to be portable.

A big benefit here is that the Switch itself hasn’t been modified in any way, with it slipping into the back of the build. This means you can go back to using the console as intended when you get a bit tired of holding up the 1.5 kilogram setup.

We really like this idea and it got us thinking of similar products released in the past which could be modified in such a way.

The one that immediately came to mind is the Razer Edge Pro which has a similar build to the Linx Vision, including the big controllers with lots of space around them that make this heavy project even remotely viable.

The Vision does have the benefit of existing material out there for modification – this guide from 2016 helped with this specific build – but a project like this may come down to what you can find locally, so keep it in mind when you hit the secondhand markets.

Thankfully these forgotten systems should be cheap to buy, even if you need to also pickup the tablet components which you won’t need for this specific application.
