Qualcomm’s next processor is designed for Windows PCs

Traditionally, PC builders have had a choice between Intel and AMD when building computers or notebooks, but now there is a third choice in Qualcomm.

Qualcomm has already made a chipset that can be implemented in PCs in the form of the Snapdragon 835, but there is a new chip the firm is calling the Snapdragon 850.

Unlike the Snapdragon 835, we won’t be seeing this chipset in smartphones as it has been designed for Windows 10 Always Connected PCs. These PCs are designed to behave like a smartphone with instant-on resume, native LTE connectivity, and a long battery life.

The CPU is built on a 10nm process and Qualcomm says this allows for sleeker devices that don’t require fans. That’s good news for folks on the move looking for a slim, lightweight notebook that behaves like a smartphone but still has the power to do some serious work.

The chipmaker claims that the Snapdragon 850 improves battery life by 25 percent which translates into 25 hours. Graphics are 30 percent faster and there is a 20 percent improvement in LTE download speeds.

Other standout features include 4K video playback at 30fps, 802.11 b/g/n/ac/ad Wifi and a core clock speed of 2.96GHz.

Qualcomm has said it has partnered with Samsung to deliver the first Always Connected PCs which will use the Snapdragon 850 chipset.

“Building on the portfolio of Always On, Always Connected PCs established over the past year, we are thrilled to work with Samsung to help offer consumers true mobility combined with the productivity and entertainment features of Windows 10,” senior vice president of Qualcomm’s mobile business unit, Alex Katouzian, said in a statement.

We should start seeing Always Connected PCs running the Snapdragon 850 later this year.
