Put your plants in this 3D print of SpongeBob SquarePants’ house

It’s been a while since we’ve seen a good 3D printed plant pot, sometimes called a planter, but SpongeBob SquarePants has been the inspiration for a new one.

Maker Lucina M has taken a print from earlier this year and remixed it in Microsoft 3D Builder.

These changes included hollowing out most of the inside of the print so that there was more space inside. The original model was only hollow in the top half, which provided less space for soil and roots.

This change also decreased the amount of filament needed to print, even when it was scaled up to 75 centimetres from the original 52 centimetres.

With a new base fitted printing only took around two hours with a layer height of 0.3 millimetres, which provided just enough detail.

For the finishing work there was no sanding done, so you may want to break out the sandpaper when you make your own if the striations on this version bothers you.

For the relatively simple paint job yellow, blue and grey acrylics were used. The MakerGeeks Peach Ice Cream filament was used here with its colour creating a good base that can still be seen after painting.

If you’re going to be using any colour of filament you have around, you may need to do some extra painting.

To make your own start with the files available for free on Thingiverse. Make sure you also check out the original design to see if it fits your needs better.

Outside of plants it also makes a good addition to a fish tank, but remember that not all filament types are suitable for that.
