Our favourite reveals from E3 2018 so far

The Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2018 conference has yet to begin – officially at least – but we’re already giddy with excitement at some of the announcements made at the weekend.

We’ve already heard from EA, Microsoft and Bethesda so far and there have been some truly fantastic reveals from all of them; here are some of our favourites.

EA’s indie titles steal hearts

Sports and Star Wars had no match when EA revealed two swoon-worthy indie titles: Unravel 2 and Sea of Solitude. The former is the sequel to Unravel and sees Yarny getting a friend for company on a puzzle platforming adventure. Unravel 2 is available right now.

Sea of Solitude is a much more serious game focusing on the emotion of loneliness. The art style and music showcased in the trailer are fantastic and we can’t wait to try this game out.

Anthem

Bioware got tongues wagging last year when it revealed Anthem, and this year the developer showed us a bit more of the game. Players will take control of one of four Javelins – Ranger, Colossus, Interceptor, and Storm. Each Javelin is unique to the game with its own playstyle and benefits.

We’re just going to come out and say it: Anthem reminds us an awful lot of Destiny, right down to the bit of gameplay we saw during the reveal. Bioware did say that Anthem’s story will be constantly evolving which gives us a bit of hope that we won’t just be endlessly grinding for loot.

Anthem’s release date is 22nd February 2019.

The Division 2

At launch, Tom Clancy’s The Division was a buggy mess but after many tweaks and much care from Massive, today the game is the most fun loot and shoot game we’ve played.

For that reason, we’re really excited to play the sequel to that game. Microsoft’s Xbox conference revealed that The Division 2 takes us to Washington DC in summer. We did see a bit of gameplay which you can check out below, scripted multiplayer chat included.

We’re hoping to see more of this game at Ubisoft’s conference, which happens later today.

The Division 2 is out 15th March 2019.

Forza Horizon 4

Pip pip and tally ho guv’na, Forza Horizon 4 is going to jolly old England.

The racing game that is part simulator, part arcade racer will tear through the countrysides of England with dynamic seasons that will change as you play. Microsoft also announced that it had acquired Forza Horizon’s developer Playground Games.

Worryingly, Forza Horizons 4 will feature a shared open world which Microsoft says will be great for making friends but we just predict many intentional crashes. Still, it worked fairly well in 3, so there isn’t too much to worry about.

Forza Horizons 4 launches on Xbox and PC on 2nd October.

Fallout 76

The gaming world appears to be split on Fallout 76 and so are we. The newest game in the franchise is an online-only multi-player game that takes place in West Virginia. The game sees you playing a resident of the first Vault to ever open in the Fallout universe, Vault 76. The game is multiplayer but Todd Howard said during the Bethesda conference that you won’t see hundreds of other players but rather dozens; it is the Wasteland, after all.

We’re going to wait until we see more of this game before slamming it because honestly we’ve only seen a slice of what is on offer. That having been said, if you were hoping for another single player Fallout game you’re going to be left wanting when Fallout 76 launches on 14th November.

Deon is particularly acid about what we’ve seen so far as he’s a huge fan of the single-player Fallout experience and VATS, but he’s also going to reserve judgement until we know more.

Gears 5

Microsoft revealed a brand new Gears 5 trailer that sees us leaving the Fenix family and instead playing as Kait Diaz. The developer is The Coalition who has held the Gears name for the longest time. It looks gorgeous and you can play with a friend online or split-screen.

Gears 5 (note the exclusion of the “of War”) is set to release in 2019.

Cyberpunk 2077

After what feels like an eternity, we finally have some concrete information about the next game from CD Projekt Red.

The game looks like the love child of GTA and Blade Runner in that CDPR looks to have built a world that is more full than The Witcher 3.

We see guns, androids, sports cars and meet the main protagonist but that’s about it. We’re hoping E3 yields more Cyberpunk 2077 news as the trailer is fine but we really want to see some gameplay.

There is no release date for Cyberpunk 2077 yet.

This is just a slice of what E3 2018 has brought us so far, and we haven’t mentioned the smorgasbord of sports games from EA, Bethesda’s teasing of The Elder Scrolls VI, Doom Eternal and Starfield or Respawn Entertainment revealing the title of its new Star Wars game – Star Wars Jedi Fallen Empire.

All of this already and we still have Ubisoft and Sony’s conferences this evening to come? Yes please.

What a fantastic time to be a gamer.
