Eskom says lights will remain on as unions threaten shut down

Eskom is having a bit of a rough week.

The utility announced that there would be no wage increases this year as it reigns in its financials.

Understandably this news didn’t sit well with employees and this week employees affiliated with the National Union of Metalworkers SA (Numsa) and the National Union of Mineworkers (Num) demanded an increase of 9 – 15 percent.

The latter has said that if Eskom does not review its zero percent increase offer it would continue to try as many avenues as possible before downing tools completely.

“If the CCMA and Eskom board structure does not work, we’ll go to the Minister of Energy Jeff Radebe. If he doesn’t listen to the working class, we will go to the president of the country. If the president doesn’t come up with a solution, there’s going to be a total shutdown,” Num spokesperson Livhuwani Mamburu told EWN.

Eskom meanwhile has said that it is prepared for strikes by workers.

“Eskom’s power stations and other critical facilities continue to operate optimally in line with the contingency measures that the company has put in place to ensure security of power supply during this period of wildcat strikes,” the utility said.

The utility also reminded employees that they are regarded as an essential service and are not allowed to strike.

For now, the lights appear to be staying on despite a number of unrelated blackouts in Johannesburg.
