Fortnite players on Switch can’t use the same account they used on PS4

During Nintendo’s Nintendo Direct conference at E3, Epic Games revealed that Fortnite was now available for Switch.

It was something we were expecting given how popular the game is and how big it may become in the next few years. What we weren’t expecting were issues.

Fortnite player and Reddit user SapiR2000 decided to play some Fortnite on their Switch after the announcement only to be met with a message that reads “This Fortnite account is associated with a platform which does not allow it to operate on Switch.”

The message goes on to say that Epic Games can’t change this.

The offending platform mentioned in the message appears to be the PlayStation 4 as many players are using the same account on PC, Xbox and iOS without issue.

What strikes us as odd is that the account itself is owned by Epic Games and not Sony. As many Fortnite players have speculated, there might be some text in Epic’s agreement with Sony that allows the Japanese firm to lock Fortnite accounts to PlayStation, but this is unconfirmed.

While you are able to unlink your Epic Games and PSN account, users report that this doesn’t work and you will still be unable to access the game on the Switch.

The only workaround at this stage appears to be creating a new account which means leaving all your progression in Fortnite on PS4 behind.

Users have taken to forums to lambast Sony and criticise the firm’s refusal to allow cross-platform play in games.

Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller even pointed out that this move makes him want to ditch PlayStation in favour of Xbox because this issue doesn’t seem to exist on that console.
