Why load shedding returned on Thursday and how to prepare

After years without it, load shedding hit parts of South Africa on Thursday night.

Eskom implemented stage one load shedding last night because of intimidation and sabotage by striking workers that led to the utility being unable to guarantee that the power supply would be interuptted.

Workers are demanding, among other things, an up to 15 percent wage hike but Eskom has said that it will not be offering increases this year as it is trying to get its financials in order.

So, last night Eskom’s hand was forced and load shedding was implemented.

Several municipalities including City of Tshwane and City of Johannesburg implemented load shedding with the former warning that it may have needed to elevate load shedding to stage two due to supply constraints.

Load shedding was eventually ceased two hours after Eskom announced the start of it.

Eskom has told EWN that should protesting workers continue to sabotage the power supply load shedding may be implemented on Friday.

For us, and other South Africans, that means checking the load shedding schedules and planning your day around them.

As in past years these schedules are usually loaded on to your municipality’s website so be sure to check there first. If your power supply comes directly from Eskom you can head over to its website. Once there key in your province, town, and suburb and get a schedule.

We recommend checking those schedules and unplugging any electronics because you never know if the power will surge when the lights come back on.

Be sure to check batteries in torches and lights that you might use and if you haven’t used your generator since the last time we had load shedding we recommend getting it serviced, especially if it has been doing nothing but collecting dust.
