Google Podcasts is a fuss-free way of enjoying your favourite shows

Google has released a bespoke app for podcasts on Android phones.

While it has been possible to listen to podcasts through Google Play Music, Google Podcasts is a cleaner experience doing exactly what it says on the tin and nothing more.

That’s not a bad thing though. The app is tiny at just 238KB but you will need capacity to store all the podcasts you download.

The user interface is extremely lean at the moment but Google says it will introduce additional functionality such as subtitles in the future.

They also add that you will be able to listen to any podcast of the “millions” of podcasts available on the platform. The firm says that it will use artificial intelligence to offer up recommendations of podcasts you might want to listen to.

Google Podcasts also syncs across other Google products.

“Google Podcasts seamlessly syncs across a variety of Google products, including the Google Assistant. So if you’re listening to a podcast on your phone during your commute home, you can resume it on your Google Home when you arrive. Over time, we’ll integrate Google Podcasts into more places you use Google,” the firm says.

Google also announced that it will be working with the podcast industry to make the space more inclusive. They note an alarming lack of podcasts from women and people of colour and hopes to change that with skills development.

The Google Podcasts app is available exclusively for Android devices through the Google Play Store.
