Instagram’s IGTV is causing headaches for users

Instagram has launched IGTV with many praising the firm for creating what appears to be a competitor to online video juggernaut YouTube.

But IGTV’s launch is off to a rocky start.

A quick gander at the r/Instagram subreddit reveals that users are experiencing performance problems with the app.

The more common problem appears to be with uploads. Users report that once an upload reaches 90 percent it stops – and in some instances crashes – and there is also no visible way to cancel uploads.

Most of these issues seem to be exclusive to Android smartphones, particularly those made by Samsung.

The IGTV app also appears to rapidly drain your battery even if it is not in use. Earlier today I experienced this for myself when, after downloading the app, I left to run some errands. Upon arriving at my destination my Samsung Galaxy S9’s battery was flat. The only app that was running was IGTV.

A quick look at the Android Battery Use gauge revealed that in 10 minutes IGTV has used 1% of my battery and that’s without watching a full video.

Beyond that a number of users aren’t happy that portrait is the default orientation for IGTV.

Some creators have worked around this by flipping a landscape video into portrait before uploading but it’s not an ideal situation for a creator that wants to publish to YouTube and Instagram at the same time.

Of course it has only been a few hours since the launch of IGTV and we’re sure these issues will be fixed by way of an update soon considering how many folks are affected.

Vertical video appears to be here to stay.
