Smart Cities Africa Summit kicks off next week

The topic of smart cities is a popular one at the moment especially here in Africa.

As African countries continue to rise on the global stage, cities are becoming increasingly urbanised which brings with it a number of challenges.

Populations are not showing signs of slowing down and humanity’s environmental impact on the planet isn’t getting any lighter.

Through the use of technology, however, these challenges can not only be faced but overcome.  Code For Africa for instance has contributed to air quality monitoring in Nigeria using low cost air quality sensors.

The data gleaned from these sensors helps government and citizens make decisions to improve the air quality.

Smart solutions like this are popping up all over the continent and the Smart Cities Africa Summit hopes to showcase this.

The Summit will be taking place at the Emperors Palace Hotel on the East Rand of Johannesburg from 4th – 5th July.

A delegate pass will cost R6 950 but, if you book for five people, a sixth person can attend for free. Tickets can be purchased through the Smart Cities Africa Summit website.

The Smart Cities Africa Summit will also host a number of notable speakers including Johannesburg City mayor Herman Mashaba, chief strategy officer at DFA Vino Govender and senior cybersecurity specialist at CSIR Muyowa Mutemwa.

For our readers that can’t attend htxt.africa will be attending the summit as a media partner so be sure to check out the site next week where we’ll be sure to bring you interviews and news from the event.
