Nvidia reportedly unveiling new GeForce GTX 1180 GPU at Gamescom 2018

It’s been almost two years since Nvidia showcased its latest iteration of GeForce GTX GPU, which means that an upgrade is in likely in the offing. Although unconfirmed by the American company, reports suggest that a new offering could be on the way next month.

According to The Verge, Nvidia has sent out invites for an undisclosed event at Gamescom 2018 on 21 August in Cologne, Germany. While there is no indication of what will be unveiled, it is believed to be a PC-related presentation.

As such, it has led some to conclude that a new GeForce GTX GPU in on the way, and if we according to past naming conventions the forthcoming graphics card could be called the 1180.

Added to this, Nvidia has subsequently cancelled its appearance at next month’s Hot Chips Conference, which could also point to the company planning something to reveal at Gamescom instead.

Furthermore, The Verge notes that a Lenovo rep recently spilled the beans on what Nvidia was working, suggesting that a GeForce 11 Series GPU is in the works and could be powering one of the Chinese manufacturer’s gaming PCs.

If you’re still not convinced, an engineering sample for the GeForce GTX 1180 surfaced online last week.

As for what the new GPU is touted as being capable of, it is expected to support 4K resolution gaming at a 144Hz refresh rate, along with Tom’s Hardware adding that 16 GB GDDR6 memory, 3 584 CUDA cores and a clock speed between 1.6 GHz and 1.8 GHz may be present.

Given those kinds of numbers, the GeForce GTX 1180 would prove a hot commodity, and find its way into some of the best upcoming PCs and notebooks that 2018 still has to offer.
