Kroonstad gets much needed fibre connectivity boost

At the conclusion of the most recent national census in 2016, Statistics South Africa reported that internet access in the Free State was far below the national average.

Only 5.4 percent of Free State residents said they had internet access at home which isn’t good when compared to provinces such as Gauteng (14.8 percent of residents have internet at home) and Western Cape (23.6 percent of residents have internet at home). The national average is 9.5 percent.

In a bid to change the game somewhat FibreCo has announced that it has completed its fibre roll-out in Kroonstad.

There is even better news however, as FibreCo has made the decision to make its network open access which means more choice for consumers when it comes to choosing an internet service provider (ISP).

“FibreCo’s open access model in Kroonstad allows any number of service providers and operators to buy connectivity without the large capital outlay, making it significantly more affordable than if they were to build the infrastructure themselves,” explains chief executive officer at FibreCo, Simon Harvey.

The first ISP to partner with FibreCo in Kroonstad is Access Global.

“It is a great honour to be the first ISP associated with FibreCo in Kroonstad. We are driven to maintain client satisfaction with all our products and services. We strive to ensure that all our clients are treated with integrity while being efficiently and effectively serviced,” says Access Global executive director Hennie Roets in a statement.

FibreCo hopes to bring connectivity to more towns across South Africa as it adds to its 4 000km long open access network.
