Half of all users on an Infinity War subreddit will be banned soon

—Avengers: Infinity War spoilers below—

Around the time that Infinity War was released a new subreddit was created in /r/ThanosDidNothingWrong.

Aside from being a place to joke and shitpost about the movie and its events, the community began to decide that, to properly emulate the movie, half of the subscribers to the sub should be banned in Reddit’s own version of the finger snap.

It was communally decided that the right time to do this would be when the subreddit reached 100 000 subscribers.

By that time the effect of banning 50 000 users all at once would be substantial and, as far as we know, the largest event of its kind in the history of Reddit.

Unfortunately that 100K milestone came and went and the moderators of the subreddit didn’t go through with the banning, despite calls from the community to do so.

This got worse as the subreddit continued to grow in popularity. People seemed to be flocking to /r/ThanosDidNothingWrong both to be part of an Infinity War community, and to be included in the banning, should it ever happen.

After a few half attempts at users leaving of their own volition, the moderators have finally come through and announced that half of the current 270K+ subscribers will be banned on 9th July.

You can read the full post here, but it seems that Reddit administrators needed to be brought in to help this event along.

It was also decided to postpone the snap to next week because of the 4th of July festivities in the USA.

If you, like us, have been subscribed and are actually dreading the ban, it has been suggested in the comments that those turned to dust can hang out at /r/InTheSoulStone. This is a reference to the theory that all the characters “killed” by the snap are simply inside of the Soul Stone.

There’s also the possibility that the (Reddit) snap will be undone after Avengers 4, so these bans may only last until next year.

The only real problem we see is inherent to the way bans are handled on the site. When a user is banned, the subscriber count doesn’t decrease, as you can still be subbed to a community you have been banned from.

Because everyone wants to see the subscriber count go down after the snap, we hope the admins program it in such a way to unsub at the same time.
