Volvo launches spin-off M brand focused on car-based apps

Volvo has announced the launch of a spin-off brand called M, as the Swedish carmaker aims to venture into the mobile space with what it is describing as an “intuitive app.”

Precisely how intuitive this application will be is unclear, with the finer details of the services on offer not being disclosed at this stage.

What it has mentioned, however, is that the the app will do more than simply let users know where they can purchase the latest Volvo vehicle, and how much it will cost them.

“The services currently available mainly offer alternatives to a taxi or public transit. We’re focused on the way people use the cars they own, which sets us apart. We aim to provide a real alternative to that experience,” noted Bodil Eriksson, chief executive officer of Volvo Car Mobility.

As such, the M brand looks to be the company’s latest version of car sharing, but whether it will look to compete on the same level as an Uber or Lyft is unknown.

That said, the company already has a similar offering in the form of Sunfleet that operates exclusively in Sweden, but that existing car sharing service is expected to be folded into M’s operations some time next year.

The Swedish manufacturer may then be positioning M as a value-added service to current Volvo car owners. Potentially offering them the chance to drive a Volvo vehicle should they have flown to another city or country, and not wish to rent a car from a usual agency.

We’ll have to wait and see what Volvo’s grand plan for M is in coming months.
