Live-action Gundam film gets greenlit

When you think giant robots, you think Gundam.

If you’re a fan of the storied anime franchise, which has gone through multiple incarnations over the decades, then you’ll be glad to hear that an original Gundam live-action movie has been greenlit, with production on the project already underway.

Legendary Entertainment are at the helm here, with previous notable films including Jurassic World, Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla and Pacific Rim, which means they have definite experience when it comes to big budget CGI-driven films.

The announcement during Anime Expo 2018 (5th – 8th July), which is currently underway in Los Angeles, California.

For now the finer details for the project, as far as casting, the setting, and indeed what the source material for the story will be, are yet to be revealed.

That said, a press statement issued after the announcement noted that the live-action Gundam movie will be set in the “Universal Century”, which isn’t really that notable as most Gundam animated series are set in the same fictional era.

“The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted,” read the statement.

There’s no word of when the live-action Gundam movie is slated to hit cinemas, but hopefully they take their time with this one, and do a good job, less we have another Transformers on our hands.

Hopefully this isn’t the last piece of big news that Anime Expo serves up over the next few days.

Let us know your thoughts about the announcement of the live-action Gundam movie on Twitter and Facebook.
