Samsung Foundry and Arm partner up to produce 7nm processor capable of 3GHz

Smartphones have reached a plateau in terms of performance thanks to the restricted form factor of smartphones.

Some manufacturers, most notably ASUS, have found ways to work around these limitations by adding external cooling solutions allowing ASUS to overclock a smartphone’s CPU and squeeze extra performance out of it while still managing thermals.

In its quest for higher performance in smartphones Samsung Foundry has announced that it and Arm will form a strategic foundry collaboration to produce Cortex-A76 processors capable of reaching clock speeds of 3GHz and higher.

That’s performance on par with notebooks and desktop PCs.

The project will be based on Samsung’s 7LPP (7nm Low Power Plus) and 5LPE (5nm Low Power Early) process technologies.

The 7nm process will be ready for production in the second half of this year according to Samsung. What’s more is that work on the Extreme Ultra Violet lithography process is expected be completed in early 2019 paving the way for smaller 5nm processes that would presumably sip power more sparingly than the 7nm model.

“Samsung Foundry’s 7LPP and 5LPE nodes are innovative process technologies which will meet our mutual customers’ needs to deliver the next generation of advanced system-on-chips (SoCs) from mobile to hyperscale datacenters,” said Arm vice president of marketing Kelvin Low.

There is no word on when we will see these chips in products but it’s exciting to know that Samsung and Arm are working together to improve the performance capabilities of mobile devices.

Who knows, with performance of 3GHz+, maybe we’ll see notebooks running chips from two firms that have focused on making chips for smartphones.
