Three weeks on and we still know very little about the Liberty hack

Three weeks ago Liberty Group informed customers that it had suffered a breach of its systems by hackers.

The hackers had allegedly found a crack in Liberty’s security, siphoned data from the firm and then proceeded to demand a ransom for the data.

Fast forward to today where an htxt.africa reader sent us the most recent communication from Liberty Group to its clients.

“Dear valued Liberty customer, We would like to thank you for your understanding and support over the last three weeks following the illegal and unauthorised access to our IT infrastructure. As a result of this intrusion, information largely in the form of emails and attachments was stolen from us. This matter remains subject to a criminal investigation and we continue to contact customers impacted by this event as appropriate. If you have any further questions or concerns, please contact your financial advisor, call us on 0860 456 789, or email us on info@liberty.co.za. Thank you once again for your continued support.”

So we know that emails and attachments were taken, but we already knew that.

The trouble seems to be that the matter is still being investigated and disclosing information might compromise the investigation.

In a bid to get more information from Liberty we fired off a few questions to the firm and in response we received the following statement.

“Liberty can confirm that the matter of the recent illegal and unauthorised access to its IT infrastructure by an external party is still subject to a criminal investigation and we are working with the relevant authorities. We can further confirm that there are no reports of any customer who has suffered any financial loss as a result of this incident. We continue to contact customers impacted by this event as appropriate. Liberty remains in full control of its IT environment following significant steps to further secure our systems. Liberty will update all relevant stakeholders on the outcome of the investigation at the appropriate time.”

It seems then, that patience is needed until the investigation is finalised. Let’s just hope Liberty Group finalises the investigation sooner rather than later.

In the mean time, stay safe and be aware of any suspicious emails, calls and the like claiming to be Liberty, especially during tax season.
