The Tshimologong Digital Innovation Precinct launched its Digital Content Hub this morning in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

The hub was born from an existing collaboration between Tshimologong and Digital Lab Africa – a French Institute of South Africa initiative – which sought to help African content creators realise their projects.

Now Tshimologong, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the French Institute of South Africa have collaborated to turn the initiative into something physical and – ultimately – more sustainable.

Over the next three years AFD will contribute R14.5 million to Tshimologong so that it can expand the capabilities of the hub to include spaces to create content for virtual reality, 360 degree video, games, and more.

“We need this kind of partnership for much needed skills development in the country. This partnership will further create market access between French companies and South African startups, driving investment opportunities for digital content businesses. It is a win-win for all involved and Tshimologong is excited to work with both the AFD and IFAS,” chief executive officer at Tshimologong Precinct, Lesley Williams said in a statement.

As we learned during our crash course in video production and editing a few weeks ago, content creation can be tricky and expensive without support and we hope this hub serves as a way to shrink that skill gap.

Tshimologong says that it hopes to have fully incorporated digital content development into its incubation activities by 2021.
