Reddit recaps the banning of 200K+ users on an Infinity War sub

—Avengers: Infinity War spoilers below—

Last week it was announced that something special was happening on Reddit: half of all subscribers to /r/ThanosDidNothingWrong would be banned in its own version of the snap seen in Infinity War.

Since then the bans have happened and now, with the dust settled, Reddit admins have put together a recap of the largest mass ban in the site’s history. Aside from acting as an explanation for those who have not been keeping track, it also provides a host of new information about the event.

The bot that carried out the snap, affectionately known as “Banos”, took three hours to run through all the subscribers and banned 231 488 of them.

Those who felt the wrath of Thanos received a message in their inbox alerting them of their fates which also prompted them to unsubscribe and to go join /r/InTheSoulStone instead. This newer sub plays off of the theory that everyone “killed” by the snap is instead contained within the Soul Stone.

This event had a few quirks, one of them being the “reward” of the “I don’t feel so good” flair, which they can’t actually use on the sub they’re banned from.

Another is the fact that Banos did not unsubscribe anyone. One of Reddit’s core functionalities is the fact that a banned user can still view and upvote posts in a subreddit they’ve been removed from, as they stay subscribed. This means that the subscriber number on /r/ThanosDidNothingWrong is artificially inflated.

On the plus side, the community suggestions of unique badges has come to fruition. Anyone who was subscribed, together with community engagement such as commenting and posting, should receive a badge titled “Snapped” or “Spared” with an appropriate icon.

We say “should” because we’ve seen many users reporting that they do not have a badge.

All of this is just the surface level stuff, so we do recommend reading the blog post to learn more.

Our favourite moments come from Marvel staff taking part in the event. one of the Russo brothers survived, while the other was snapped. While we’d like to believe this to be a happy coincidence, the cynic in us says it was intentional.

The best part, however, must be Thanos’ direct involvement. Josh Brolin released this… rather odd message to the community.
