Multichoice to end VOOVTV’s run on DStv citing lack of traction

Remember VOOVTV?

For those scratching their heads in confusion, VOOVTV was billed as a channel where viewer content would make up the programming.

Viewers were able to download the VOOVTV app and live-stream their lives to their audience through the app. Some streamers would eventually make it on to the dedicated VOOVTV channel on DStv.

The channel was launched last year in November and today Multichoice has revealed that VOOVTV’s run on DStv will come to an end on 31st July.

“While VOOVTV offered a fresh take on TV, and produced learnings that are already influencing the future of TV production, it didn’t gain the traction anticipated. As from 31 July 2018, VOOVTV will stop airing on DStv,” the firm said in a press statement.

Using user generated content to create programming has proved to be rather tough in other parts of the world too. That’s not to say that VOOV has failed mind you but rather that it’s run as a TV channel didn’t prove as successful as DStv would have hoped.

YouTuber Casey Niestat attempted this with his app Beme before it was bought by CNN and then shuttered at the beginning of this year, though that app was more about sharing breaking news and opinion with other users than it was about making content for TV.

Another YouTuber, Philip DeFranco, has also dipped his toes into garnering opinion from viewers with his DeFranco Now app. That app seems to be faring rather well if DeFranco is to be believed.

With that app user content is curated and may or may not feature in the creator’s YouTube/Patreon content.

Of course Beme and DeFranco Now differ from VOOVTV in several ways but it doesn’t seem like ordinary folks have taken to live streaming like gamers did to Twitch. It’s also worth noting that streaming video would use a fair amount of data which can be rather expensive here in South Africa.

Multichoice did state that, “VOOV hopes to explore more opportunities on TV in future” though what exactly those opportunities would entail remains to be seen.
