Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Watch will reportedly run Tizen OS

We’re getting closer to IFA 2018, which takes place in Berlin from 31st August to 5th September. As the European event nears, it also means that more rumours about Samsung’s latest wearable are beginning to surface, with reports of a Galaxy Watch being the latest.

According to SamMobile, the South Korean company could be changing things up slightly for its latest iteration of smartwatch. More specifically, the website’s sources say Samsung will ditch the Gear brand name in favour of Galaxy.

As such, the wearable device that they debut in Berlin could be called the Galaxy Watch, or Galaxy S Watch.

What that means for the fitness-focused Gear Sport and Gear Fit remains unknown, but aligning the smartwatch with Galaxy makes some sense especially if Samsung wants to tout it as a premium device like the Galaxy S9 or upcoming Note 9.

Along with the reported name change, the Galaxy Watch is said to retain Tizen as its go-to operating system, with the device featuring Tizen 4.0 out of the box, according to SamMobile.

Samsung has opted for Tizen in its wearables since 2015, and the latest offering appears to be continuing the trend. This is neither here nor there, as my experience with Tizen on smartwatches has been on par with the Android Wear variants.

As far as other elements for the Galaxy Watch, SamMobile adds that the device will bake in Bixby, but given how middling that digital assistant has proved, perhaps opting for Google’s version may have been a better option.

Nevertheless, we should see whether SamMobile’s sources are true come IFA 2018.

With the Galaxy Note 9 debuting on 9th August as well, there is quite a bit of new hardware for Samsung fans to get excited about.
