Samsung Knox – The Watchful Guardian

Getting a new smartphone is like receiving a new gift. The box eases open, you peel the protective plastic off of the perfect display and then you wince slightly as the brighter than expected screen powers on.

The joy soon passes however as you realise you need to download the updates and apps to make your smartphone a bit, well, smarter.

Social networks, games, news service, photo editors, and more quickly make their way on to smartphones but how many times have you considered downloading an anti-virus for your smartphone?

These days a smartphone resembles a computer more than it does a cellphone from the days of yore and we use them as if they are. Communication, banking, socialising and more are all done through our phones now and that presents a risk for users and business owners.

Rather than forcing users to download additional applications, Samsung gives its users protection out of the box in the form of Knox.

Often referred to as “enterprise grade security for your Samsung Phone” it is available in three grades, Samsung Secure Folder which is free and the entry level container solution, keeping your personal information an apps locked away from prying eyes and with anti-malware protection pre-installed.

Knox Manage is Samsung’s Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solutions that offers Mobile Device Management (MDM) and Mobile Application Management (MAM) features and has online technical and ticket support. It also includes remote support functionality, allowing IT to assist employees while they are out of the office.

Then there’s the highest grade of protection with Knox Workspace offering defense-grade security through security mechanisms that protect you against malware, cyber threats and more. Knox security is baked into Knox enabled smartphones, tablets and wearables at the manufacturing stage so users are protected against threats from the instance you switch on your phone.

Capture, configure and deploy with ease

While protection is at the heart of Samsung Knox, the software also helps businesses manage and deploy devices to staff.

Should a business order 200 Samsung Galaxy S9’s for instance all the device IMEIs can be uploaded to the Knox Mobile Enrollment server before the smartphones have left the box.

Samsung Knox Manage is a cloud based EMM solution that removing the need for IT to install and maintain costly servers. From here an IT administrator can push through Wifi settings, corporate application, email configurations and more so that when an employee gets their new device it’s ready to go. All the employee needs to do is turn on the phone after removing it from the box and he/she will be automatically enrolled into the predefined EMM solution for the IT Administrator to manage with any additional intervention.

All of this is possible through the Knox Platform for Enterprise that is pre-embedded in the Knox enabled smartphones and tablets. This platform provides an IT team with government-certified encryption, advanced VPN tools and tools that allow for the monitoring of devices and data usage if so needed.

In addition, Knox allows for the creation of a container within a device so that work and personal data and applications can be kept separate. This is especially useful for employees that handle sensitive information but still want the ability to share photos with friends and family.

When it comes to updates Knox shines again. All updates can be tested by the IT team to ensure that it does not clash with other apps used by a firm. If everything works together well, then updates can be deployed to all devices with Samsung E-FOTA at the click of a button.

What really makes Knox great however is that you won’t ever know that it’s working even while it is. The security solution is lightweight and always on, watching over your device to make sure your data is always safe.
